Thamel Chhaya Devi Center being built illegally

If everything goes as planned, Kamal Pokhari, or the lotus pond, may again be teeming with the flowers. Kathmandu Valley Development Authority (KVDA) has decided to restore the pond which has remained uncared for since a long time and turn it into a recreational public park for city dwellers. The authority has already completed the design of the park to be built around the pond and is preparing to begin construction from the next fiscal year.Though the pond has been named after lotus flowers--which used to float abundantly on its surface in the past--not a single lotus plant exist in the pond today. Currently, the pond is shrinking and on the verge of drying up owing to heavy pollution and negligence on the part of the government. A shopping complex, Chhaya Center, including a five-star hotel will be constructed in the tourist hub of Thamel with investment of Rs 3 billion by seven entrepreneurs. Construction of the Chhaya Center has been started with an aim of completing it within three years and it will include five-star hotel The Thamel Palace, shops, restaurants, cinema halls, food courts, banquet and other facilities.
