Shamar Rinpoche was cremated according to his wishes at the monastery he ran in Rani Baan near the capital Kathmandu. The Cabinet agreed to allow the cremation of a senior Tibetan Buddhist monk here after earlier barring his remains from returning to the country, prompting claims that the government was bowing to Chinese pressure. The Nepali Embassy in India initially granted approval for Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche’s body to be transported to Nepal from India for cremation after he died of a heart attack in Germany last month. The body of Buddhist Guru Shamar Rinpoche has been kept at the Syarvan Monastery at local Raniban for the members of the general public to pay their last respects to the 14th Rinpoche. Thousands of his followers and disciples from across the globe have thronged Kathmandu to pay homage to Rinpoche. The body would be kept for the public viewing until tonight and the last rites performed in the monastery premises on Thursday, according to Dwa Syangbo Hyulmopa, a member of the monastery.
