Tea farmers in Kanyam of Ilam district have switched to cow farming, as the production cost of tea was high of late. Around 1,035 farmers have set up a chilling center at Paltange, the heart of Kanyam at a cost of Rs one million and are supplying dairy products to outer districts. Kanyam is famous for tea production.
They have begun collective cow rearing as an alternative to tea farming after they could not make a good income from it following a fall in the price of green tea leaves.
People here have started cow farming as an alternative business to tea farming after their business went to loss due to a fall in the price of green leaves, said Tularam Shrestha, a member of the Green Agricultural and Livestock Farm, Siddhigaun.
Youth farmers of Siddigaun of Kanyam have set up three big cow farms in the village. The Siddababa Dairy Producers’ Cooperative collects milk from the village and supplies to the market. Normally, the cooperative witnesses the milk supply worth Rs 60 million annually.
Other people around the village are encouraged to begin commercial cow farming after they got a chilling center at their locality to store milk and send it to the market.
The Sunsari based Kamdhenu Milk Development Cooperative is a regular importer of milk from the district and sends it to different parts of the country.
