After Chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Lokman Singh Karki recently engaged in a heated debate with journalists when asked about his ´interest´ in smuggling of betel nuts, the issue of illegal export of betel nuts to India through Nepal has once again come to the fore. "Nobody knows about traders of the firms as these firms have been registered in the name of relatives of prominent businessmen in the districts. They are doing so in order to cover up the smuggling of betel nuts imported from third countries to India saying that they are produced in local farms," said a knowledgeable source at the Morang chapter of FNCCI.
