Government of Nepal has been issuing Machine Readable Passports (MRP) from December 26, 2010. The non-machine readable passports issued before that date, which is currently in circulation, shall remain valid up to November 24, 2015 only (even if the date of expiry indicated in the passport is beyond this date).
Nepali citizens who are holding non-machine readable passport may apply for a new Passport (MRP) at any time before the expiry of their passports. Department of Passport issues Machine Readable Passports (MRP). It takes 6-8 weeks for the Department of Passport to issue an MRP upon receipt of necessary documents. The Embassy collects applications for MRPs and forwards them to the Department of Passport in Kathmandu and arranges delivery to the applicants once the passports are received from Kathmandu. In view of this process, it may take 12- 14 weeks for an applicant, who applies for MRP through this Embassy, to get a new passport.
